What to Expect on Sunday
All are welcome: You don’t need to be Episcopalian to attend church at St. Martin’s-in-the-Field. At communion all may receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist or a blessing. If you decide to join our parish talk to our clergy about being received into the Episcopalian community.
Choose a worship service to attend: Our 8:00 a.m. service is a simple spoken communion service using traditional language. This intimate gathering lends itself to more contemplative worship. Our 10:00 a.m. service uses contemporary language and features organ, piano, and our choir.
No dress code here: Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Some members get more dressed up, some less.
All are welcome at communion: At St. Martin’s-in-the-Field all are invited to receive communion, which is the consecrated bread and wine. Stand or kneel at the altar rail and hold out your hand(s) to receive the bread in your palm. Gluten-free wafers are available on the far left of the altar rail. Receive the wine either by drinking from the common cup or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine in the smaller intinction chalice. Cross your arms over your chest if you prefer not to take the wine.
Recieving a Blessing: If you do not wish to, or are not able to receive communion, we encourage you to come to up during communion to receive a blessing. Stand or kneel at the altar rail and simply cross your arms over your chest. As clergy approaches with the bread, they will know to give you a blessing instead of communion. In this way, everyone can participate in this part of the service.
Children and youth in church: We welcome children of all ages to all of our services and invite them to check out our children’s and youth programs. We encourage parents to involve their children. Please sit near the front so little ones can see. Sing joyfully with them, lead them in prayer, model good listening, and share with them the sacrament of Holy Communion. We also understand that children wiggle; please do not fret when they do. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” We are followers of Christ; we love all, especially the wigglers. If your little one would prefer to play our nursery, we offer child care for children three years and under.
Make a connection: Grab a donut and some coffee and join us at 9:00 AM for our Christian education hour which has something for everyone: adults, children and youth. You can also join us for fellowship and refreshments following our worship services. Tell us about yourself and take a moment to fill out our Connection Card. We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you better.
